Today is the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The most shining example of peace and the triumph of freedom over tyranny, peace over war, and hope over despair. Guess who’s not attending?

Just a bit of history and linguistics:

The Berlin Wall (der Mauer) was, in its early days, referred to by the leaders of the GDR as ein antifaschistischer Schutzwall—an anti-Fascist Shield Wall. Almost as ironic as the name of their government: German Democratic Republic.

Ich bin wirklich ein antifaschistischer Schutzwall.
