This post is a little behind the news. I don’t know if you have heard, but the stimulus behemoth just passed the House yesterday, not a real surprise by any stretch of the imagination. The interesting aspect of this vote was the resolute stance taken by the Republicans. Looking at the role call, you can see something that hasn’t happened in years: No Republican names in italics in the “yeas” column. The unity of the House Republicans is awesome.
This is what it must be like to be in the completely minority party. And you know what, it feels good. Conservatives around the world groaned with this bill’s passage, but for the first time in a long time we groaned at the same time. I don’t think this will end up being a House Republican stand. I thought someone would fall, but the flag of conservatism was still flying. Hopefully, this cause will be taken up by the Senate Republicans, and with this recent article quoting the Senate Republican Whip and a recent talk given by Senator Jim DeMint, I have a good feeling about where the conservative Senators stand. The only thing I worry about is the lukewarm duo from Maine: Sens. Snowe and Collins. Those two are most apt to compromise conservative principles at the drop of a hat. This all adds up to a wonderfully maddening debate: will they stand with the Democrats and stand against their party to shut down a filibuster or will the Republicans “hold the line”? Now is the time for all conservatives to make their mark. We have to stand up as one or be lost in this wave of progressive liberalism.
